Performance, Film | Resistance in place (2023) 8m
Resistance in Place begins with the performer applying tape to their own face, a deliberate act of learning and unlearning the body’s limits.
Hands are then set aside as the tape is manipulated only with the tongue and facial muscles. Some pieces come off, while others remain, as exaggerated expressions, tears, reddened eyes, gasping breath, sighs, and trembling muscles repeat.
The work is not simply about movement—it reflects the body caught between sticking and detaching, shaped by social conditions and the cultural constraints of being an Asian woman.
Through repeated attempts and failures, the body exposes the tension between social norms, expectation, resistance, and compliance, allowing the audience to feel the subtle strain between holding on and letting go.
The body’s unconscious effort to lift the invisible tape becomes a visible and sensory record of persistence, struggle, and remaining tension.
